SoWa Sundays: New England’s Largest Outdoor Bazaar!
First things first. What up with SoWa Sundays? Well, our buddy Chris said it right six years ago when he wandered down an art studios hall around here asking people why such a funkadelic neighborhood didn’t have a New York style street market every Sunday?? Why would any self-respecting urban ville (except the Upper East Side or maybe Saugus, MA) not sport a free good time where people can roll out of bed, shake their Dorothy Hamill and get a little something hand-made to eat or to hang on their walls or around their neck? For not much money.
Why indeed? Hello SoWa Sundays. We’re here to save you from a shrewish economy and death by cable TV.
The South End is certifiably Boston’s most from-the-ground-up creative neighborhood. We make our own pastries, we agitate until the City caves in once again and paves our sidewalks with more bricks, we have more artists (wacko and otherwise) than lawyers (now THAT’S saying something in this country) and we hate, make that abhor, chains. Dunkin’s has an enemy outpost at either end of our ‘hood but we can see the whites of their eyes … and we’re not blinking. And, yes, we’re heating up the tar and feathers for that Starbucks over there.
But it’s also Boston so it’s not like you’re in Galveston and everyone’s all smiley face and driving polite-like. That’s why it’s important for us to issue a big ten-gallon welcome to one and all! So here goes ……. “Y’all come on down to SoWa! Give us your bored, your depressed, your huddled suburbanites (we mean Charlestown). We’ll treat ‘em right!”
